Larsen B

You're fractured and cold but your heart is unbroken,
My favourite foremost coastal antartic shelf,
Oh Larsen B, oh you can fall on me,
Oh Larsen B, desalinate the barren sea.

Larsen B & British Sea Power

Larsen B is the subject of one of British Sea Powers greatest momennts, the song 'Oh Larsen B', which features on 2005's 'Open Season'.

Larsen B is one of three ice shelves that constitute the Larsen Ice Shelf, situated along the eastern coast of the Antarctic peninsula between Cape Longing to Hearst Island, in the Weddell Sea. It is named after Captain Carl Anton Larsen, who sailed along the ice front in December 1893.

Larsen B collapsed between 31st January and 7th March 2002, releasing some 3,250km of ice into the surrounding seas. The ice shelf had been stable for 12,000 years.
