The Great Skua

The Great Skua is a large seabird in the Skua family Stercorariidae. In Britain, it is sometimes known by the Shetland name Bonxie.

The Great Skua is 50-60cm in length, and has a wingspan of 125-150cm. Adult colouration is a streaked greyish brown, and they show white wing flashes when in flight. It is an aggressive bird, harrassing larger birds to steal food, and readily killing smaller ones. Its diet also consists of fish and carrion.

As a migrant, the Great Skua spends the winter months off the coasts of Spain and Africa, returning to its breeding grounds of the Scottish Isles, Iceland, Norway and the Faroes Islands for the spring and summer. Its most common habitat is coastal moorland and rocky islands.

Further information on the Great Skua can be found on the RSPB website.
